Half-Life 2

Overview

Half-Life 2 is set in a world slightly ahead of ours. The first game gave us a look at alien life coming to Earth, and the complications of the U.S. military clashing with such a force. But the second is something far different. This game is a first person shooter, revolving around a cutting-edge physics engine and puzzles designed for it, action-packed fights, and a narrative-driven story of rebellion against overwhelming force.

Main Characters

Gordon Freeman is our recurring main character. He’s a mute scientist who survived the events of the first game, and saved Earth from an alien invasion, as any great hero does. He’s taken on the military, aliens, and has now come for the Combine.

Alyx Vance is our sidekick-type buddy throughout most of the game. Alongside a few others, Alyx is the most recognizable ally to Gordon, and is usually fighting by your side or getting supplies for you, whatever you may need.

Main Conflict & Story

Taking place in a world only slightly behind ours, an alien race known as the Combine have come, and very easily enslaved all of man. Their super-advanced technology and nearly infinite numbers lead them to taking over the planet in 7 hours flat. They’re your main enemy throughout the game, always your greater target, of which consist of recruited human soldiers, and assimilated aliens that can do nothing but fight on their orders.

Second and third to the Combine, are general aliens, and reanimated ‘zombies.’ Your aliens are quite simple, being no more than beasts that prowl in sand, or on ceilings, or crawl about looking for a host. Zombies are the product of that lastly-mentioned animal, a Head Crab (such a process is shown in the above image). When one latches to a person, they become a mindless husk.
So, as Gordon, we have a mission to save our fellow man from the crushing grip of these space oppressors.

Reflection

This game is known by a great many gamers as an extremely good shooter, one of the best ever made, with a story that is remarked by many to be great, and endlessly replayable throughout its lifetime. Though it may lack a heavy narrative like some games, it takes its fun in the action, the battles and infinite possibilities you can come up with to end any such fights.

The game itself revolves around a story of rebellion, with the humans gathering and fighting back all the threats that purvey them. These people, like any of us in such a situation, are up against nearly impossible odds, but still persevere to attain that dream of a free planet, like the one they had so long ago.

If you wish to experience the cultural magnate that is Half-Life 2, then I can only say, go ahead.
